Surls used to live and work in Splendora,
Texas but has recently relocated to
Colorado. He is the best known sculptor
in Texas and is well-known nationally
and internationally. His many awards
include the very first Legend Award
from Dallas Visual Art Center and an
Artist Fellowship from National Endowment
for the Arts. Mr. Surls has had many
invitational exhibitions including the
Whitney Biennial, the Dallas Museum
of Art, the Metropolitan Museum in New
York and too many others to list. He
has taught at Southern Methodist University
and was chairman of the Art Department
for the University of Houston.
